How a Macadamia Farm in Meru Stopped Selling to Middlemen

Patrick farms a small plot of macadamia trees in Meru County. For years, he grew good nuts and still couldn’t make ends meet. He had no road to a real market, no training, and no credit. Middlemen set the price, and he took what they offered.

Then he started supplying The Big Thundernuts.

Today Patrick earns a fair, steady income from the same land. Regular training has taught him to grow more nuts with less water and fewer chemicals. His soil is healthier, his yields are up, and his farm can better withstand the droughts and erratic rains that climate change keeps bringing.

He is one of more than 2,000 farmers we work with across Kenya. Together, Kenyan growers produce over 5,000 tonnes of macadamia a year, which puts the country among the world’s top three producers. Most of that harvest starts on small farms like his.

Beyond the nut

We don’t see ourselves as only a buyer. We put money into health, education, women’s rights, and conservation in the communities we source from. Our factory runs on clean energy made from macadamia shells, so what used to be waste now powers production.

Women make up at least 80% of our workforce. That wasn’t a target we stumbled into. It’s a choice about who gets steady income in a household.

What a factory does for a neighbour

Jane Wahu runs a small catering business just outside our factory. Her place sits off the main road, surrounded by homes, and before we opened, customers were scarce.

Once we began operating, she had a built-in market overnight: our entire workforce now eats in her kitchen. The business has grown enough that she’s added pigs for extra income. She feeds her family, and she pays her children’s school fees from what she earns.

Jane isn’t a supplier or an employee. She lives near us. That’s the kind of ripple we aim for.

What your purchase does

Our goal is simple: help rural Kenyan families earn more by growing macadamia the right way. Every pack you buy keeps that cycle going, with fair prices for farmers, work for women, and income for the businesses around our factory.

So enjoy the nuts. They’re delicious and good for you. And you’ll know the money behind them is doing real work.

We are The Big Thundernuts. We grow nuts, and alongside them, farms, incomes, and communities that last.
